Genetic Testing

Finding the right mental health medication can often feel like a long journey of trial and error. At our practice, we use advanced genetic testing—known as pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing—to help take the guesswork out of your treatment plan. This simple, personalized tool helps us understand your unique biology so we can choose the right medication for you faster.

What is Genetic Testing for Mental Health?

Genetic testing is a non-invasive, quick cheek swab performed right in our office or in the comfort of your home. The test does not look at your ancestry or predict your future health risks. Instead, it analyzes specific genes that control how your liver breaks down and processes medications.

By looking at your genetic blueprint, we can gain valuable insights into how your body will respond to common prescriptions for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and others.

How it Helps: The Key Benefits

Reduces Trial and Error: Instead of spending months trying different pills to see what works, we use your DNA data to target effective options sooner.

Minimizes Side Effects: The test flags medications that your body processes poorly, helping you avoid severe or uncomfortable side effects.

Provides Answers: If you have struggled with psychiatric medications in the past, this test can provide a biological explanation for why they didn't work.

How We Use the Results

Your report uses straightforward recommendations; it can be interpreted as color-coded "traffic light" system to categorize medications:

Green (Use as Directed): These medications have no genetic red flags and are great baseline options for your body.

Yellow (Moderate Interaction): These drugs may require minor dosage tweaks or extra monitoring.

Red (Significant Interaction): These medications interact poorly with your genetics and are typically avoided unless necessary.

Please note: This test is a valuable tool, but it is not a crystal ball. It does not tell us which medicine will perfectly cure your symptoms, only how your body physically metabolizes the drug. We combine these results with your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms to build your final care plan.

Insurance and Cost: Is it Covered?

Genetic testing for psychiatric medications is covered by most insurance plans.

Medicare & Medicaid: Typically cover the test completely, resulting in $0 out-of-pocket costs for qualifying patients.

Commercial Insurance: Most major private insurance plans offer partial or full coverage.

Financial Assistance: For plans with high deductibles or those without coverage, testing laboratories may offer financial assistance programs.

Before we order your test, please contact your insurance to verify your specific insurance benefits so you know exactly what to expect.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The Swab: We gently rub a cotton swab inside your cheek for about 30 seconds.

The Lab Analysis: We ship your sample to a secure, certified testing laboratory.

The Review: Results return in about a week. We will sit down together to review the report and choose your personalized treatment path.
